High School Preparation

High school students can prepare to major in mathematics at Illinois State by taking four years of high school mathematics, excluding general mathematics but including two years of algebra (one of which should be advanced algebra), geometry, trigonometry, and precalculus. Many students also take two semesters of high school calculus: such students may obtain college credit for that work via a proficiency examination or advanced placement.

Correct placement is a key to the successful study of mathematics. Placement tests at Illinois State help students enter the mathematics sequence at the point most appropriate for them. Students are advised to review their high school mathematics before taking the placement test at the University.
