Douglas & Dorothy Bey Scholarship
Dr. Douglas Bey retired from the ISU Mathematics Department in
1976 after 32 years of teaching at the undergraduate and graduate
levels. Dr. Bey also tested students for placement and credit, counseled
foreign students, served on many University committees, and belonged
to many professional organizations.
Award of at least $1100 to a senior Mathematics Major intending to
pursue a graduate program in the Mathematical Sciences. Selection
based on scholarship, service, and potential. Scholarship winner selected
by the Mathematics Department in the fall semester.
Senior Awards
Several Senior Scholastic Achievement Awards of at least $100 are
made each April. Two of the recipients are designated Outstanding Seniors
in Mathematics and Mathematics Education.
Outstanding UTA Award
The outstanding Undergraduate Teaching Assistant of the year is
presented with an award of at least $l00 in April.
Charles and Doris Jones Textbook Award
This award was established in honor of Charles and Doris Jones,
the parents of Dr. Graham Jones. Dr. Graham Jones taught in the ISU
Mathematics Department until he retired in 2002.
One or more awards of at least $100 for students enrolled in the
Junior High/Middle School Mathematics Program. Qualified students
should demonstrate academic promise, leadership, and character qualities.
Awardees must be full-time students and must have attained junior
or senior status.
Undergraduate Teaching Assistantships
Assist in MAT 119 or tutor in the Mathematics Tutor Center. Qualifications:
good GPA in mathematics and overall desire to help others learn, and
an ability to work with other students. Assistantship pays $5.15 per
hour with an average of 7 10 hours of work per week. Mathematics
Department Office has application forms Session Deadlines: April
1 for fall, November 1 for spring.
Cooperative Education/Internship Work Experiences
Full-time career-related positions with business, government, or
industrial firms available during a semester or summer in the junior
or senior year. Salaries of $750 $1800 per month with generation
of one s.h. of credit per month of employment. Applicants must have
a GPA of at least 2.75 overall and 3.00 in Mathematics courses, at least
two 200 or 300 level courses in Mathematics, and evidence of good written
and oral communication skills. Interested students should contact the
Cooperative Education/Internship Coordinator in the Mathematics Department.
Work in Conjunction with Faculty Grants
Positions available periodically to assist mathematics faculty
with various grant activities which could include general office tasks
and clerical work, interviewing school children, construction of mathematics
measurement instruments, and assistance with research in mathematics
education. Good typing skills and a good GPA required. Applicants may
