Abstract

Charlie Vanden Eynden (ISU), Penrose's Puzzle Pieces

  • Abstract:
  • The plane can be filled with polygons in many ways; this is called a tiling. Some tilings are periodic, in the sense that a pattern is repeated over and over in a regular way. For example, any tiling with congruent squares with vertices touching only other vertices is periodic. Penrose's puzzle pieces are two polygons that can be used to fill the plane, but never in a periodic way. This talk will be suitable for undergraduates.
