Magic squares are among the oldest mathematical objects. They are found in various cultures and have been objects of study for at least five thousand years. In this talk we will make a journey through their extensive history: we will discuss normal magic squares, pan magic squares, prime magic squares, alpha-magic squares, and Benjamin Franklin's magic squares, including a method of constructing Franklin's squares. The method mentioned caused a magic square "hype" in The Netherlands in 2007.
