Illinois State University Math Club

Constitution

Ratified: 27 February 2004

Article I: Name

The name of the organization shall be Math Club.

Article II: Purpose

It shall be the purpose of the Math Club to promote mathematical knowledge in a social atmosphere, and to provide service opportunities for its members.

Article III: Membership

Section A:

Membership is open to any Illinois State University (ISU) student, while currently enrolled, who signs the Math Club membership registry.

Section B:

Individual members may formally withdraw their membership at any time by submitting a signed and dated written statement of withdrawal.

Section C:

The members of the Math Club agree to uphold and adhere to the ISU Student Code of Conduct. 

Section D:

Any member found to be in violation of ISU Student Code of Conduct may be removed from membership, after due process.

Article IV: Quorum

A quorum for official meetings of the Math Club shall be twenty (20) members or a simple majority of members, whichever is less.

Article V: Officers

Section A:

The Executive Committee of the Math Club shall comprise the President, the Registrar, and the Finance Officer, together with any additional members elected as needed by the membership of the Math Club.

Section B:

All members of the Executive Committee shall be current members of the Math Club.

Section C:

The Math Club shall have a Primary Advisor, who is a current member of the faculty or staff of Illinois State University, approved for this role from time to time by the Chairperson of the ISU Mathematics Department.

Section D:

The Math Club may have one or more additional Advisors, approved for this role from time to time either by the Chairperson of the ISU Mathematics Department or by the Executive Committee.

Section E:

The members of the Executive Committee of the Math Club shall be elected in the ISU Spring semester, by the end of February.  Their term of office shall be until the election of the next Executive Committee in the following ISU Spring semester.

Section F:

Each ISU Spring semester, any member of the outgoing Executive Committee not elected to the new Executive Committee may serve as an Advisor to the new Executive Committee, with the automatic approval of that Executive Committee, until the end of the current Spring semester.

Section G:

A vacancy on the Executive Committee arising for whatever cause shall be filled by election by the membership at the earliest practical time.  The term of office of the newly elected member of the Executive Committee shall be until the election of the next Executive Committee in the following ISU Spring semester.

Section H:

Public notice of a meeting at which any election of members of the Executive Committee is to take place shall be given at least seven (7) days prior to that meeting.

Section I:

Any member shall be elected to the Executive Committee by gaining a simple majority of the votes of members present at a meeting of which public notice has been duly given in accordance with Section H, and at which a quorum is present.  If several candidates are contesting for one position on the Executive Committee, and none receives a simple majority of the votes of those present, one candidate receiving the least number of votes shall be ruled out of contest, and another election from among the remaining candidates shall be held immediately.  In the case that no candidate receives a simple majority of votes of those present, and more than one candidate receives the least number of votes, the candidate ruled out of contest shall be selected by a random drawing from among those with least number of votes. 

Article VI: Duties of Officers

Section A:

The President shall give leadership to the Math Club, shall preside at Math Club meetings, and shall be the official representative of the Math Club whenever such a representative is required.

Section B:

The Registrar shall maintain the official membership registry of the Math Club, shall keep record of meetings of the Math Club, and shall represent the President in the President's absence.

Section C:

The Finance Officer shall be responsible for fund raising on behalf of the Math Club, and for maintaining the financial records of the Math Club.

Section D:

Each Advisor shall advise and assist the Math Club in achieving its purpose. 

Section E:

No Advisor shall be a member of the Executive Committee.

Section F:

Each Advisor shall regularly communicate with the Executive Committee, and may attend any meetings of the Executive Committee in an advisory capacity.
