Persons who are teaching or who plan to teach at the elementary or middle school level may elect the Sequence in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Education.
A total of thirty-two hours of courses, with at least 24 in mathematics, are required, Fifteen hours must be at the 400 level, including at least 10 in mathematics. Either a written comprehensive examination or an approved thesis with no more than six credit hours in MAT 499 is required. Graduate Assistantships are available for qualified applicants who study full-time on an academic year basis. Recipients are engaged in teaching, tutoring, and other support activities for approximately 18 hours per week. The stipend in Fall, 2007 is $ 990 per month, for nine months. A full 12-month tuition waiver that includes courses taken the following summer accompanies graduate assistantships. Individual tuition waivers for full- or part-time students are also available. Applications for a graduate assistantship are available from either the graduate admissions office, or the Department of Mathematics’ graduate director.

Two months should be considered the minimum period of time between application and registration for classes; international admissions should leave more time. Decisions for Fall semester graduate assistantships are made beginning March 1.
