Master's Degree Program

Program Options

Because student needs and interests vary, there is flexibility in the Mathematics Master’s Degree Program at Illinois State University. In addition to allowing students to get a strong general background in mathematics, our program allows students to concentrate in:

  • secondary school teaching,
  • statistics,
  • actuarial science,
  • biomathematics,
  • preparation for teaching at a community college level,
  • preparation for continuing on to a Ph.D. program in mathematics or mathematics education, or
  • computational or applied mathematics.

A master’s degree requires either 39 credit hours without a thesis, or 32 credit hours with a thesis. Please see the graduate catalog for additional requirements and information.

Sequence in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Education

Within the Master’s Degree Program, a sequence in mathematics education is available for specializing in teaching elementary / junior high mathematics. Thirty-two credit hours are required in this sequence, as well as a written comprehensive examination. Please see the graduate catalog for additional requirements and information.

Financial Assistance

Graduate Assistantships are available for qualified applicants who study on an academic year basis. Recipients are engaged in teaching, tutoring, and other support activities for approximately 18 hours per week. The stipend in Fall 2007 is $ 990 per month, for nine months. A full 12-month tuition waiver that includes courses taken the following summer accompanies graduate assistantships. Individual tuition waivers for full- or part-time students are also available. Applications for a graduate assistantship are available from either the graduate admissions office, or the Department of Mathematics’ graduate director.

Admissions Process

The following items must be submitted to 2200 Graduate Admissions, Illinois State University, Normal, IL 61790-2200:
