Master's Degree Program
Program Options
Because student needs and interests vary, there is flexibility in the
Mathematics Masters Degree Program at Illinois State University.
In addition to allowing students to get a strong general background in
mathematics, our program allows students to concentrate in:
- secondary school teaching,
- statistics,
- actuarial science,
- biomathematics,
- preparation for teaching at a community college level,
- preparation for continuing on to a Ph.D. program in mathematics or
mathematics education, or
- computational or applied mathematics.
A masters degree requires either 39 credit hours without a thesis,
or 32 credit hours with a thesis. Please see the graduate catalog for
additional requirements and information.
Sequence in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics Education
Within the Masters Degree Program, a sequence in mathematics education
is available for specializing in teaching elementary / junior high mathematics.
Thirty-two credit hours are required in this sequence, as well as a written
comprehensive examination. Please see the graduate catalog for additional
requirements and information.

Graduate Assistantships are available for qualified applicants who study
on an academic year basis. Recipients are engaged in teaching, tutoring,
