There will not be a Research Event in the Spring of 2008, and instead this Fall 2007, during the Illinois State University Sesquicentennial celebration, we will host some special lectures. The second was a lecture by Mr. Shane Chalke, FSA, MAAA. Mr. Chalke is an actuarial entrepreneur, who created two influential actuarial companies, and has been a pioneer in actuarial practice and theory. The Society of Actuaries presents his profile here. Mr. Chalke's biography is here. Mr. Chalke spoke about the changing nature of personal finance, retirement, and what problems this poses for the financial services industry. The lecture was presented at 4 p.m. on Friday, October 19, 2007. This event was open to the public. Here is the summary of Mr. Chalke's presentation:
A Cash Flow Model of the American Professional
The nature of retirement is changing rapidly, as are patterns of earnings and expenditure. Attitudes about inter-generational transfer of wealth are also far different than those of just 20 years ago. Mix these factors with the steady decline of defined benefit pensions, and we have significant gaps in the provision of financial products. The industry has responded with a series of point solutions, but without a comprehensive view to changing consumer needs. By modeling individual cash flow patterns and in today’s society, we can develop a more holistic view of what consumers really need from the Financial Services Industry. Mr. Chalke will speak about the nature of saving and consumption changes over the last generation, and what this means for financial services.
There will not be a Research Event in the Spring of 2008, and instead this Fall 2007, during the Illinois State University Sesquicentennial celebration, we host some special lectures. Dr. Bilodeau spoke on her joint research with Semira Puskar, in a presentation entitled "Designing the Best Pension Plan", addressing the question: In view of different working patterns and taking the inherent financial risks into account, is the final salary defined benefit pension plan really the one every employee should wish for?
